Consumer Protection

Consumer protection is advanced by many state statutes and in addition by certain rulings and policies from federal agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission. For the most part, however, consumer protection is a matter of state law. States govern the tactics of many types of businesses to ensure that people are not the victims of fraud. Many states have a government agency that takes calls from people who have suffered fraud or other forms of business related rip-off. At the federal level, the Federal Trade Commission monitors things like e-mail scams and multi-level marketing fraud. The Securities & Exchange Commission also has a number of rules and regulations to help ensure that people are not defrauded by unsavory investment scams.
