Consumer Protection Law
Consumer protection law is a matter of both state and federal regulation. In addition, while consumer protection law is primarily civil law, the agencies that investigate complaints may seek criminal charges against people and businesses. This happens in many contexts, including deceptive business practices, capital raising schemes and e-mail scams. At the state level agencies that protect the public against these types of conduct are often affiliated with the state attorney general’s office. At the federal level enforcement is often done through the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
