Consumer Law
Consumer law is a broad field that includes both state and federal statutory and regulatory schemes. In general, the entire body of statutes and administrative rules have been enacted to protect people from fraud and other types of deceptive business practices. In most states people can contact the office of the Attorney General or a special protection agency to report fraudulent or deceptive practices. If several complaints are lodged against a person or business the state will usually conduct an investigation and perhaps file a lawsuit. At the federal level, consumer law is focused around the Federal Trade Commission. The Commission investigates complaints and prosecutes people and businesses.
