Collections
Collections involve attempts to have a debt paid. Usually, a debt will go to collections once it is ninety days or more past due. Some businesses attempt collections internally, while others hire a collections agency. Some law firms generate most of their business working for companies as collections agents. Collections law includes the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a federal law that limits the conduct of a collections agency attempting to collect debts. Violation of this law can result in heavy fines that a collections agency definitely wants to avoid. People also hire lawyers to negotiate on their behalf with a collections agency.
