Civil Law
Civil Law is the entire body of law that governs litigation between people and businesses. The civil law system is distinct from the criminal law system and governed by its own body of law and procedures. There are also distinct sets of procedures, rules and law related to federal civil law and the civil law of the fifty states. Civil law relates to the entire process of filing a lawsuit, discovery and motion practice, trials, judgments and awards of damages. The law related to the civil system also pertains to appeals from civil law cases. Many lawyers practice in the civil law system, filing and defending civil suits. Most people do hire a lawyer when bringing a civil law case or defending against another’s claim. However, it is possible for a person to bring a civil law case without a lawyer. The most common civil law cases where people often do not use a lawyer are small claims cases.
