Child Protective Services (CPS)
Child Protective Services (CPS) is a government agency that acts to ensure the safety of children and uphold child laws. When any reports of child abuse, child neglect, exploitation or abandonment arise, CPS is called upon to conduct an investigation. If CPS believes a child is in danger, the agency can seek help from the police or the courts to enter a home and inspect the child, even when permission is denied by the family. Unless a child is at risk of serious harm, CPS will work with a family and provide or arrange for social services to keep the child in the home. If the child must be temporarily removed for safety reasons, the primary goal is to return the child to the home and to his or her family, if at all possible.
